Still Life With Oil Pastel Underpainting with Tricia Reust

We will explore the basics of drawing form and tonal dimension, construction and lyrical movement across Still Life, completing two smaller still life exercises and one larger work. Tricia will be discussing basic theory, and demonstrating throughout the session.

Materials Requirements: We will be working from photographs, so you will need to bring along several still life photographic studies, preferably your own photographs - you are welcome to follow the demonstrations, or select from Tricia's photographs.

The exercises will involve single object studies, with the larger work comprising a more involved composition. Essential : Visual diary, kneadable eraser and soft graphite pencil (eg 4B or 6B) for taking notes and working out composition.

Art Spectrum Paper, preferably Soft Umber in colour, two quarter sheets taped to one board, and one larger piece taped to another board (no smaller than a half sheet).

Your regular soft pastel supplies, including particular colours associated with your photographs, terracottas, and darks eg AS D517 Flinders Red Violet, P534 Indigo, D528 Prussian Blue, D570 Phthalo Green, D520 Flinders Blue Violet or comparable colours from other manufacturers;

a selection of pastel pencils for fine detail including a white pastel pencil and a soft charcoal pencil, pencil sharpener or Stanley knife; rags and a sheet or piece of fabric to place on the table or under your easel. Black oil pastel sticks, (at least two), turps, rag/sponge and a jar or container
