Petrai Ferguson

Art is something everyone can enjoy. Whether or not you can paint yourself, it doesn't matter, as you can hang an original artwork on your wall and immerse yourself in the mood of the painting. I love creating something that I have experienced in life and sharing these feelings with others "on paper". Life is absolutely full of precious moments; whether they be happy, sad, funny, quirky or beautiful...the list goes on. I have two young children and they enable me to experience life to the full and this emotion I bring to my artwork.

There are many mediums to utilize whilst painting, however I particularly enjoy pastels. I feel that pastel paintings are "vibrant and full of colour" They can be applied quickly and make it possible to capture that instant, that brief point in time, which inspired me to paint. I have lived in Brisbane all my life. I have two loves in life: being a pharmacist and a painter. I work both in retail pharmacy and do Home Medicine Reviews for doctors. It is a great joy to help people by using my knowledge and skills. Whilst being a pharmacist allows me to be with people, painting allows me to bring the emotions experienced in life to others. I hope you have had as much pleasure from looking at my pictures as I have had painting them.

Colina Grant FRAS Master Pastellist

It seems painting has always been my passion….going straight into the National Art School once I left secondary school and also working in an art studio in Sydney there was little doubt it was to be my life. Although taught most mediums it is pastel which has become the medium for which I am most requested to teach and the one that has won me most acclaim: and it happens to be the one that I taught myself, just by trial and error. For this reason I believe its immediacy and brilliance, make it a perfect medium for beginners It has been with pastel that over 130 first prizes have contributed to the Combined Art Societies of Sydney awarding me “Artist of the Year” 8 times.

Although still enjoying all the other mediums, I find pastel is still my favourite because of it’s versatility whether the subject be the soft mists at dawn or the busy colourful markets, a gentle portrayal of a child or craggy rocks at the beach pastel will work every time!

I have had 10 solo shows and numerous 2 person and other group shows since 1980. Have produced a calendar for local and overseas distribution . 2 series of collector plates.(also for Aus. & overseas.) Illustrated books and book covers and written articles for the Australian Artist and Artist’s Palette magazines.

Cynthia Hargraves,Oxenford, Gold Coast Art teacher Cynthia Hargraves - Master Pastellist, B ed,Dip Teaching,Blue card holder, Webmaster for PSA

Cynthia lives in Oxenford on the Gold Coast. She conducts classes from her studio in Oxenford and teaches all ages, children included, as well as all genres and many mediums. View more on her Oxenford, Gold Coast Art Classes.

She finds no greater joy than expressing the beauty of the world in the form of art. She feels it is so easy to get caught up in the busy mundane events of everyday life that we cease to really slow down and enjoy the simple beauty that surrounds us.

It is her intention to express this beauty by painting directly from life or photos either in landscapes, still life, flowers and portraits (people and animals). By capturing those fleeting moments in life of shifting light, atmosphere, moods and expressions, she hopes to share this precious essence and joy of life with you

Shall be demonstrating Portraiture at the International Association Of Pastel Societies at Albuquerque in May 2009. This demonstration had to be cancelled due to family health concerns.

Recent publications of teaching and art work can be viewed in Australian Artist Magazine 2005,2006 and more recently can be seen in the Australian Artist no. 297 March, 2009. Another more recent article is awaiting publication.

Gail Higgins

After commencing art lessons in 1995 Gail became increasingly interested in painting Australia’s beautiful native flora and fauna and now devotes more and more of her time to painting birds and the research that involves.

A winner of many major awards, including Silver Medallist at the International Wildlife Art Society 2004 exhibition in Bristol, UK , The Pastel Acquisitive Award at Pine Rivers Art Awards 2006, major award winner at Courier Mail Art Show 2005, Gail has also won many major awards at QWASI exhibitions including the Australian Birdkeeper award for bird art on three occasions. She was invited to hold a solo exhibition at Australia Zoo on Steve Irwin Day, November 2008, featuring the native flora and fauna found in the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, Cape York.

She has had several articles published in Australian Artist and Australian Birdkeeper magazines. In 2005, with Sandra Temple, she produced Aussie Friends in our own backyard, an art and education book for children, based on images of their wildlife paintings.

After completing a Cert IV in Assessment and Workplace Training , in 2003 Gail commenced her own art classes and in 2007 moved into her teaching studio in Wynnum. She is sought after to conduct workshops in pastel - her favourite medium because of the vibrancy and the tactile nature of pastels - and this year was Artist in Residence during Birdweek at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island (and will be again in 2009).

In 2006 she was awarded Master Pastellist status with the Pastel Society of Australia. She was accepted as an exhibiting member of the Queensland Wildlife Artists Society in 1997 and is currently Secretary, a position she has held for many years. She is a member of the Nature in the Raw group of wildlife artists and the Old Schoolhouse Gallery in Cleveland where her work can be found.

She is motivated by the belief that wildlife art is not only about the art, but also about the environment in which we live -- wildlife artists have much to offer in creating awareness of our disappearing wildlife.

Artist Statement
When I am asked why I paint wildlife particularly, I find it difficult to explain except to say that I cannot help myself – I am never so happy as when I am painting birds. There is a type of compulsion in me to hold a pastel or brush to try to capture on paper the beauty and unique characteristics of birds.

I hope that my paintings will encourage others to give thought to wildlife and the environment and to believe that the natural world is precious and worth preserving.

Yvette HugillYvette Hugill - Master Pastellist

http://www.yvettehugill.net
Email: Yvette Hugill
Contact: (02) 6557 1180

Yvette studied Graphic Design through the National Art School, Sydney, working for a number of years in the industry. She moved to Gunnedah, North-Western NSW in the seventies. During her children's formative years, she found little time to pursue her interest in art, painting only occasionally. She later enrolled in two TAFE art courses, renewing her interest in both painting and drawing, attaining Distinctions in both subjects on completion.

Pastels, oils and coloured pencils are the media of choice. She is inspired by her surrounding landscape and her pastel paintings are distinguished by muted skies and soft grasses. Her still life compositions are uncluttered, with strong lines, shape and colour.

Yvette tutors in Pastel Workshops through the local Community College. She is a member of the Pastel Society of Australia and the Australian Coloured Pencil Artists. Her work has been purchased for private collections in Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.

Sharon Jack

Sharon paints in soft pastels sealed and varnished on canvas.

Sharon is following an American technique where the pastel is applied on canvas then sealed between the layers of pastel with an acrylic medium and finished with an acrylic gloss medium/varnish.  It took Sharon two years to master the technique.

The seal and varnish is sprayed on using an airless spray gun.  There is no dust, don’t need frames or glass, and there is no limit to the size of the painting. The process is quite challenging.  Each work on canvas is a new experience depending on the touch, colour and seal.  However, the vibrancy of the pastel is retained.

Sharon is contacted by Pastellists world-wide for the technique.

Sharon is currently living in Tom Price, WA and painting the Pilbara.
